Thursday doors #17 Tikal

Not so much doors this week as entrances to the incredible Mayan ruins of Tikal in Guatemala.

The “front steps” leading up to the “front door” where incredibly steep and long! The would no running off with the temple treasures easily! The size of the temples makes the entrance ways look very small.

Tikal is a world renown archaeological site but it is also possibly well known to Star Wars Fans. It was used as a filming location for Yavin 4 in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The shot where a Rebel oversees the Millennium Falcon landing on Yavin was taken on top of a building known as Temple IV looking east where Temples I, II and III can be seen in the background.

  1. Nice one – I hear that most of these places no longer allow tourists to climb the ruins; a shame yet somewhat understandable.
BTW your link seems to be working fine 🙂

    • I meant to put my name up not the address. On these ruins you couldn’t climb the stone stairs but on one of them they had a steel scaffolding ladder type thing so you could walk up.
