Oddball Lion

This statue was in a square in Florence. He is just that little bit odd, don’t you think?

I am not sure if it is his expression? He looks like a naughty kid, kind of guilty and little scared at the same time, caught with his hand in the cookie jar. He looks furtive  and sneaky rather than proud and intimidating. The “King of the Jungle” does not come to mind when I see this fellow.

Maybe it is the era he was made but his mane looks the wigs seen on the dandies of Louis XIV, the sun King’s court in Versailles.

His  facial features are a little strange, the teeth and brow a little human perhaps?   His paw looks more like Gollum’s fingers that a mighty lion’s paw.

Can you see what I mean? I just thought he was odd.
